Meet Dr. Tony Miele, DVM: Founder and Visionary Leader

Dr. Tony Miele, DVM, is a distinguished veterinarian and innovative entrepreneur in veterinary medicine. He obtained his doctorate in Veterinary Medicine and Surgery from the University of Naples, Italy, in 1980. His expertise spans small animal medicine and surgery with a holistic approach. Dr. Miele pioneered the team-based "Veterinary Group" model, emphasizing collaboration where each member's unique strengths contribute to a comprehensive practice.

His career began in 1980, focusing on Standardbred horses at Yonkers and Meadowlands Raceways, followed by experience in several small animal practices in the Holy City of Brooklyn, NY.

In 1985, he founded the Brooklyn Veterinary Group in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn—the first NYC Veterinary Group animal hospital. As the name implies, the Group was founded with the idea of creating a team. This team of highly trained individuals worked collectively for the benefit of patients. All team veterinarians collaborated harmoniously, providing a vast array of services from general practice to exotics, emergency and critical care, specialty and referral services, geriatrics, holistics. This innovative approach vastly improved care and was known for its personalized attention for patients.

Up until 2020, this successful concept expanded rapidly, resulting in the establishment of 17 other animal hospitals across New York City—including Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island as well as Rome, Italy. Today, Dr Miele is focusing much of his attention on the newly formed Veterinary Group of New Jersey, as well as dedicating time for a projected animal hospital for NYSAVE.org.

Over the past three decades, Dr. Miele has delivered extensive lectures on the “Business of Veterinary Medicine” in Italy, Brazil, and the United States. He served as the featured speaker at the Itavet Symposium in Rio de Janeiro in 2019. He continues to present on contemporary and historical topics within the broader scope of veterinary practice management and professional business operations.

Throughout his career, Dr. Miele has earned notable accolades, including the MNJVMA Veterinarian of the Year award in 1993 and being the first recipient of the Brody Award from the Center for Animal Care and Control (CACC) of New York City. He has demonstrated strong leadership by serving on executive boards of key organizations, such as the Metropolitan New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association (MNJVMA), New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association (NJVMA), New York City Veterinary Medical Association (NYCVMA), New York State Veterinary Medical Society (NYSVMS), Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), and New York Save Animals in Veterinary Emergency (NYSAVE). Dr. Miele is still actively practicing veterinary medicine at his flagship practice in Bensonhurst as well as in Hillsborough New Jersey.
